Tinnitus is a condition that the average person may not be aware of, but it can be overwhelming if you’re living with it. Tinnitus, in most cases, is essentially a noise that comes from your body. It is the perception of hearing a sound, even though there really isn’t an external sound occurring. According to the CDC, nearly 15% of Americans suffer from some form of it. In pop culture, tinnitus was most recently featured in Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, where the lead character, Baby, suffers from the condition. To cope with the constant ringing, the character always has headphones in playing a variety of songs (to block out the sound). While it’s certainly an unconventional way to combat the ringing, there are a few techniques to be used if you are struggling with tinnitus.
Things To Avoid
Stress. This is the main thing you do not want added on, as it will only heighten your condition. Your level of hearing is already extremely fragile, and adding stress into the equation will only make it worse. The unfortunate part is that tinnitus naturally causes you stress, which then increases the impact of it. So, it’s important to do your best in remaining calm and finding things that will take your mind off the sound. If you know you’re going to be in a loud situation (like a concert or fireworks) make sure you have protection for your ears, that way the physical stress is reduced. The second thing to avoid is any type of unnecessary drug. Now, we’re not saying you can’t relax after work with a cold drink. However, it’s important to do things in moderation. Whether it’s caffeine, alcohol or any other type of substance, you’ll only feel the effects more if it’s not in a small capacity.
Hearing Aids
In most cases, tinnitus is a result of general hearing loss, or possibly an unexpected situation that stunted your hearing. Regardless of how it comes about, a hearing aid can benefit you by reducing the effects of the condition. A hearing aid does a great job of controlling the variety of sounds you typically face. Through the addition of a hearing aid, your experience in regular conversation or even general entertainment will be made easier. Furthermore, through sound devices, the tinnitus can be masked while you try to sleep. There’s no true cure for it, but there are ways to limit the condition.
