Protecting your hearing is like any other function that we learn when growing up. There are plenty of ways or things we use to protect ourselves, like sunglasses to shield from the sun, for example. It’s the same concept with hearing, as you’re always trying to shield yourself from potential harm. Especially when it comes to your children, hearing is precious. You don’t want them to be exposed to anything that could cause serious damage or lead to tinnitus, which is why they need to use protectors.
What Are The Best Methods?
The first step is to explain the importance of hearing. While children may not ever feel harmful effects, they do occur. It then depends on the activities and events they are participating in, and how those things affect their hearing. The audiologist can recommend the best solutions for your child’s hearing, but you need to be there to make sure they comprehend the information being presented. It’s also important to know when they should be used. For example, they don’t need to be worn 24/7. That would actually not be an ideal situation, and may negatively impact the normalcy of their hearing. Protectors should be used during loud musical moments, sporting events, or any other activities that involving booming sounds.
What Protection Is Currently Available?
The most common form of hearing protection would be earplugs. They’ve been around the longest, and that’s because they’re tried and true. They can be hard or soft, easy to transport, and they’re not overly expensive. You can also opt for foam fitting earplugs, which forms to the shape of your canal. To take it one step further, you have the option of premolded earplugs, which are similar to foam fitting but with a more accurate fit. Finally, children (especially younger children) should use earmuffs. Earmuffs resemble headphones, and while they can be costly, they also have more effectiveness.
